Operating Instructions for lights that monitor LED intensity to be IMO MSC 253 (83) 4.3.1 compliant.
Why monitor LED intensity?
LEDs will decrease in intensity over time without a reduction in current, therefore the alarm panel will not be triggered.
Signal head:
If the light intensity falls below the COLREGs nautical mile requirement, the light will flash three times, but the light will remain on (for vessels with or without alarm panels, and no back-up lights).
Double head:
If the light intensity falls below the COLREGs nautical mile requirement, the light will flash three times and the non-compliant head will be turned off. Therefore, there will be no current, so the panel will trigger an alarm (for vessels with alarm panels and back-up lights).
Autonomous Double head, Single input.
Alternates heads at startup to always ensure a working backup and to double the life of the light.
If the light intensity falls below the COLREGs nautical mile requirement, the light will flash three times, then automatically switch heads to back up.
The autonomous light works for vessels that only have a single power cable but want the safety and reliability that a double head provides.
50,000 Hours of use:
Light counts hours of use to indicate approaching end of life to schedule replacement of LED module, but can continue to use light until it falls below COLREGS requirements.
If 50,000 hours of use have been counted, the light will flash 5 times on start up.
